Cheng Kai, chairman of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF), led a delegation to visit the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD) Central Committee on Jan 17.
Zhu Yongxin, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and executive vice-chairman of the CAPD Central Committee, met with the delegation. The two sides held discussions on deepening cooperation and promoting the high-quality development of the cause of people with disabilities.
Cheng provided an overview of the progress achieved in the development of the cause of people with disabilities since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012. He expressed gratitude to the CAPD Central Committee for its long-standing support for this cause.
Cheng noted that China has made historic progress in the development of the cause of people with disabilities, setting the mission of promoting the comprehensive development of this sector within the context of Chinese modernization. However, he acknowledged that challenges such as unbalanced and inadequate development in the cause of people with disabilities persist and require continued attention and support from all sectors of society.
He commended the CAPD Central Committee for its sustained dedication to the cause of people with disabilities, highlighting the significant role played by its members in leveraging their intellectual advantages to provide policy advice and make contributions to the development of this sector. Cheng proposed that both sides further establish a long-term collaboration mechanism to jointly utilize the unique roles of multi-party consultations and people's organizations to improve the lives of people with disabilities within the process of Chinese modernization.
Zhu Yongxin welcomed Cheng and his delegation, stating that caring for people with disabilities is a crucial indicator of social progress and civilization. He highlighted the significant advancements in the cause of people with disabilities, which has earned high praise internationally. The CAPD has always focused on advancing the cause of people with disabilities and, in recent years, has raised multiple proposals on issues such as inclusive education, creation of barrier-free environment, special education legislation, and China's accession to the Marrakesh Treaty.
Zhu stressed that the CAPD has a responsibility to continue promoting the cause of people with disabilities as a long-term priority. He emphasized the need for further work on special education legislation and the promotion of inclusive education, early childhood education, vocational education in high schools, and higher education for people with disabilities.
He also expressed hope for enhanced cooperation with the CDPF, utilizing political consultation channels to provide policy recommendations and contribute to the well-being of China's 85 million people with disabilities, as well as to Chinese modernization.
Officials from relevant departments of the CDPF and the CAPD Central Committee also attended the meeting.
